This Bear Safety course is recommended for any individual who lives, play, or work in bear country.

The Bear Safety course, entirely completed online, teaches candidates the fundamentals of bear behaviour, and how to avoid or minimize bear conflicts, while in wilderness or rural areas.

This course meets the requirements of the PAWGI Bear Safety specialization for Certified Wilderness Guides and above.
The program is entirely delivered through an online course composed of 4 modules: Bear BasicsBear BehaviorConflict AvoidanceConflict Management

Each module includes a set of multi-media materials to be reviewed, assignments graded by an instructor and/or online quizzes. Upon completion of all modules and assignments, candidate receives a Certificate of Completion (wallet size).

Course is completed at the participant's own pace.

Following successful completion of the course, candidates will have acquired the theoretical knowledge that will allow them to avoid or mitigate conflicts with bears. Acquired skills include an awareness of bear biology and behaviour, an understanding of how to avoid conflicts and how to activate bear deterrents as applicable.

Certification is achieved through the Professional Association of Wilderness Guides and Instructors (PAWGI), by completing all course modules, assignments, and/or online quizzes, with a passing mark of 70%.
You must be 14 year or older to attend this course. As it is an entry-level course, no previous outdoor, wilderness, or bear experience is required.

You will need to apply directly through the Professional Association of Wilderness Guides and Instructors (PAWGI) upon successful completion of this course if you wish to receive a Bear Safety specialization.

Bear Safety specialization is available to Certified Wilderness Guide and higher.
Courses start every week, subject to instructor availability, and there is no time limit to complete the course.

The course includes all required course materials in an electronic format (the purchase of actual textbook is therefore not required), all tuition fees, as well as access to one or more PAWGI certified Wilderness Instructors.
